Why I built UmberRook
Speaking under pressure wasn’t something that came naturally to me.
I struggled with social anxiety from childhood into adulthood. Presentations, my IELTS speaking exam, job interviews—the same fear followed me into each of them.
It took me more than two decades to feel comfortable in those situations. That experience is a big part of why I started building UmberRook: to give people somewhere to practise the conversations that matter, before facing them for real.

What happens during practice?
The examiner is an animated avatar with a synthetic voice. You are not speaking to a person, and nobody is listening live. It asks one question at a time. You press Start answer and speak; when you stop, a short countdown lets you keep going before the answer is sent. Every answer has a time limit.
Which experiences are available?
IELTS-style speaking practice and Job Interview practice are open now. Sales Roleplay and Language Practice are being built and open here when they are ready.
Is there a free option?
Yes. Each open simulation has one free Pressure Test per account: up to 3 minutes of IELTS-style speaking practice, covered by an introductory grant when you create your account, and a short Job Interviews Pressure Test. There is nothing to cancel afterwards.
What is recorded, and what is kept?
Your recording is stored temporarily in private, non-public storage and sent to our transcription provider to turn it into text. We delete it after transcription; if that deletion does not succeed, automated cleanup retries it. We keep the text of your answers as part of your practice history, not the audio. We keep the text of your answers, your practice feedback and your session history for as long as your account exists. Operational records of how the software behaved are deleted automatically after 30 days. Billing records are kept as long as the law requires. Your camera is never used.
How are credits used?
One credit is one started minute of live conversation, rounded up. An IELTS-style Full Mock holds up to 15 credits from the moment its room opens and returns whatever you don't use when the session settles; the Pressure Test uses its own free 3.
